Weekly Review - 20.04.2015

Dear All,

Nifty ended at its lowest levels in the past two weeks as selling pressure extended for the third straight session. The Nifty finally closed at the day's low at 8606, down 100.70 points or 1.16 per cent on Friday.

Equity markets remained under pressure for the third consecutive session, and analysts across Dalal Street advice caution going into next week as benchmark indices could slip further from the current levels.

"The market is clearly weakening and you will have several more days of such sharp falls next week," says Ashwani Gujral, Fund Manager. Midcaps, which are yet to show sharp decline, may well come under the hammer, he adds.

"Every time there is some saving grace, but this time everything seems to be weakening together and that should lead to a fairly strong correction. So if you cannot take short positions, do not enter and move to the sidelines," he adds.

Gujral further cautions that investors should not go and buy on the dips because this time the dip could be hard. This could be because the way the market is reacting, chances are Monday morning on the back of good results you may have a 50 point gap up and then the sell off starts.

Meanwhile S&P dropped 1.1% on Friday, its biggest decline since March 25. Equities lost ground after industrials Honeywell International and General Electric took hits from the strong dollar, while concerns over new trading regulations in China and Greece's place in the euro zone dented sentiment.

Above 8794. Next 8938

Dear All,

The fall in retail inflation in March to a 3-month low of 5.17 per cent provides leeway to the Reserve Bank (RBI) to resume its rate-cutting cycle, India Inc said.

The RBI has lowered interest rates by a total of 0.50 per cent since January 2015 outside the policy cycle this year.

However, in its latest policy review on April 7, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan kept repo rate unchanged, awaiting clarity on impact of unseasonal rains on food inflation even as he wanted banks to pass on benefits of the previous two rate cuts.

Easing of food prices, mainly milk and vegetables, pulled down the March retail inflation.

The retail inflation as measured by Consumer Price Index was 5.37 per cent in February, and 5.19 per cent in January. It was 8.25 per cent in March last year.

The easing prices of milk, vegetables and fruits brought down the overall food inflation to 6.14 per cent in March, from 6.79 per cent recorded in February.

Inflation declined for 'cereals and products', although it was up in the case of protein rich items like 'meat and fish', as per the government data released today.

The rate of price rise in the food and beverages segment as a whole was 6.2 per cent in March, lower than 6.76 per cent in the previous month.

The CPI-based retail inflation has been calculated with a new base year of 2012.

Inflation in the fuel and light segment was 5.07 per cent last month, up from 4.72 per cent in February.

In the housing segment, inflation was 4.77 per cent last month, as compared to 4.98 per cent.

For the rural segment, the overall retail inflation was 5.58 per cent in March and 4.75 per cent for urban centers.

Weekly Review - 13.04.2015

Dear All,

Markets have registered gains for the second straight week after global rating agency Moody’s raised India’s credit outlook to ‘positive’ from ‘stable’, anticipating policymakers' actions will lift India’s economic growth.

A stellar performance by Reliance Industries’ (RIL) after a significant recent gas discovery, MJ-1, coupled with a strong rally in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) stocks on renewed buying interest at attractive valuations lifted the benchmark indices higher.

In the week ended April 10, the 30-share Sensex ended up 619.24 points, or 2.19 per cent, at 28,879.38 and the 50-share Nifty ended up 194.10 points or 2.26 per cent, at 8,780.35.

The broader markets outperformed the benchmark indices as investors bought mid-cap and small-cap shares at attractive valuations. BSE mid-cap index advanced 342.60 points, or 3.19 per cent, and small-cap index gained 699.61 points, or 6.28 per cent.

“The market showed a steady trend last week with a positive bias with buying emerging at every correction. The highlight was, however, the mid-cap and small-cap segments of the market which saw strong buying in several counters. For the coming week, some consolidation could be seen with moves mirroring sentiments post the beginning of the corporate results particularly TCS (Tata Consultancy Services), which could have a bearing on the IT pack. However, positive price action could continue in the mid-cap small-cap segments,” said K Subramanyam, co-head (equity advisory) at Altamount Capital.

Key events of the week
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan on Tuesday held repo rate unchanged at 7.5 per cent, as expected. Further, the cash reserve ratio, which is the amount of deposits that lenders must keep with RBI, was also left unchanged at four per cent. Moody’s ratings revised India’s sovereign rating outlook to ‘positive’ from ‘stable’ on Thursday, a step closer to an upgrade of the credit rating.

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, domestic passenger car sales grew 2.64 per cent to 176,011 units in March from 171,491 units in the same month of last year and motorcycle sales last month dipped 5.22 per cent to 8,59,521 units against 9,06,901 units a year earlier.

Real estate companies’ shares closed higher on the bourses on media reports that the Union government cleared amendments to the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill, 2013, paving the way for legislation on regulators for the sector. Anant Raj, HDIL, Sobha Realty, Oberoi Realty and Unitech gained up to 31 per cent.

Further, markets will react to the industrial production data for February released on Friday after market hours. Also, investors will cautiously await for the consumer price index and the wholesale price index, which will be unveiled next week.

Above 8794 - Fresh Short Covering & More Rally.

Dear All,

Rating agency Moody’s Investors Service on Thursday gave a much-needed booster to the Narendra Modi government ahead of the prime minister’s visit to France, Germany and Canada by revising India’s sovereign credit rating outlook to positive from stable.

However, the agency reiterated India’s sovereign credit rating at the lowest investment grade of Baa3, pointing out its weaker performance relative to peers on fiscal, inflation and infrastructure-related metrics.

The decision to upgrade the country’s rating outlook was taken at a meeting of the rating committee of Moody’s on 7 April. “The main points raised during the discussion were: The issuer’s economic fundamentals, including its economic strength, have materially increased. The issuer’s institutional strength/framework has materially increased. The issuer’s fiscal or financial strength, including its debt profile, has not materially changed,” the rating agency said in a statement.

India’s chances of a sovereign rating upgrade over the next 12-18 months is greater as investments are expected to revive, growth to improve and inflation to stay modest, Moody’s sovereign rating analyst Atsi Sheth said on Thursday.
